Ousted career diplomat Ambassador Marie L. Yovanovitch is testiying to Congress in apparent defiance of both President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Yovanovitch told impeachment investigators that a top State Department official informed her that President Trump had pushed for her removal for months prior to her eventual dismissal, even though the department believed she had “done nothing wrong.”
The closed-door deposition is ongoing. Yovanovitch’s opening statement is a scathing indictment of the Trump administration’s conduct of foreign policy. In the statement she says she was “incredulous” that she was removed as ambassador “based, as far as I can tell, on unfounded and false claims by people with clearly questionable motives.”
